Knighton-Hammond presented the coast from dramatic viewpoints and unexpected angles. In this watercolour he is high on a cliff giving a sense of his own excitement as he discovered the beauties of the sites. The view of the peninsula, possibly Cap Martin, is framed by trees which are decorative in foliage very rich in form and colour. The strong Mediterranean light and parched terrain is so typical of the French Riviera. The remarkable special organisation of this picture shows Knighton-Hammond’s interest in the study of light and atmospheric effects.
