A Passing Shower

A Passing Shower

Location: Somerset/Dorset, UK

Subject: Landscape

Medium: Watercolour

Date: 1950s

Signature: Knighton-Hammond

Dimensions: 55 cm x 77 cm

Knighton-Hammond’s character studies were not confined to portraits. The cattle grazing scene has the central cow lying down and looking out at the artist or spectator with an interesting expression on it’s face. The three others are happily grazing away in the field.

The passing showers create atmosphere sufficient for the hills in the background to take on an atmospheric blue colour. The colour of the trees is also impacted by the veil of atmosphere left by the passing rain.

In later life Knighton-Hammond enjoyed going out into the fields to paint. He was drawn to painting cattle and these always made for interesting compositions. This study of cattle would have been painted at speed in watercolour giving the feel of movement to the animals.
