The old Inn at Castellane near Grasse is in rich in sunlight and shadow. Knighton-Hammond uses dappled sunlight created by the dominant tree to good effect exploiting the special ability of watercolour to convey light and space. The street scene has cattle are being driven on the pavement past the inn with its arches making up the facade of the of the building. People in the street and in the inn observe the procession. The figure in red is a feature of the artist giving a splash of vibrancy to the composition. When Knighton-Hammond portrays everyday life, he cleverly elevated it into an art form.
