As a small boy the young Arthur used to go out after Sunday School into the fields sketching from nature. This desire remained with him all his life. This watercolour from later in his career shows a lifetime of experience and skill. The composition is made up of dynamic, conspicuous, colliding brushstrokes which target the senses of the spectator. Every stroke of the brush, seemingly so careless, has been evidently well thought out. The use of light and colour have all the features of what the artist had learnt whilst working in the South of France and Italy. Executed en plein air, the picture possesses great freshness and immediacy.
