Durham Castle may well have been painted whilst Knighton-Hammond was en-route to Scotland. The castle sits in the hillside amongst trees. The building, landscape and sky are very impressionistic with regards to the free brushstrokes, light and colour. These techniques would have been developed during the decade Knighton-Hammond spent in France and Italy.
