With his box of pastels Knighton-Hammond worked rapidly to sketch these roses in reds, yellow and white with green foliage. There is some blending and some visible stokes of the pastel sticks to create the roses and leaves. The vase is possibly silver reflecting the colour of the table cloth. The dark background projects the flower study forward.
