Knighton-Hammond selected a view between two trees to set himself up to paint this pastel landscape. The leafless trees have spindly branches so do not obscure the landscape and sky beyond. The grazing cattle in the foreground set-off the transitions of horizontal planes – cattle, trees, fields, hills and sky. The small sticks of pastel were ideally suited to rapidly notate the elements before him. He uses strong colours to portray the light in this panoramic scene and conjures up an atmosphere created by the soft pastels evoking the brightness of the day.
