This very fluid watercolour painted by Knighton-Hammond en plein air in San Remo harbour would date from the mid-1920s. The tall, imposing buildings at the harbour side lead the spectator’s eye to the prominently featured Chiesa di Can Giovanni Battista. The architecture is depicted in pastel shades of green and pink. The foliage of the trees add a richness of colour. The figures, painted at lightning speed directly in watercolour, both on the boat and at the harbour side give a sense of scale, movement and spontaneity in a true Impressionist manner. The reflections in the sea adds to the colourful composition.
