This watercolour of the harbour at San Remo would have been painted soon after Knighton-Hammond arrived on the Continent in 1922. The Impressionist approach to light, colour and tone using watercolour and exploiting its special ability to convey freshness and immediacy. The sailing boat at anchor in the centre of the composition has been boldly painted. The buildings of Old Town San Remo are bathed in sunlight and depicted in a very free manner. The cathedral - Concattedrale di San Siro, San Remo – is silhouetted against the mountain range in the background.
