This Venetian canal scene is very typical of Knighton-Hammond’s work in this iconic city. The buildings flanking the canal are drawn directly in watercolour with great freedom yet great accuracy. The gondolas tethered to the stripy mooring poles appear to be gently rocking on the water. The figures crossing the arched bridge give scale and movement to the composition. The heat haze gives a sense of atmosphere.
