Wayford Manor near Crewkerne, Somerset is a stunning watercolour used here to exploit its special ability to convey light and space. The house was built in the vernacular style for a manor house in Somerset/Dorset. Stone mullion windows with label mouldings above, raking copings to the gables, the chimneys and the balustrading are all brilliantly well described by the artist. The arched loggia to the right was designed by architect Harold Peto (1854-1933) in about 1905. Knighton-Hammond dramatically captures all the elegant charm of the house and the graceful gardens with their stunning colours. The gardener gives scale and movement to the setting as he goes about his duties. Executed on the spot this watercolour possesses great freshness and immediacy.
