Willy Lott’s House is in Flatford, East Bergholt in Suffolk. The building is most famous for featuring in a number of paintings by John Constable, notably The Hay Wain. The cottage is on the River Stour and is downstream from Flatford Mill in the heart of Dedham Vale. Willy Lott was the tenant farmer at the time Constable was there painting. Knighton-Hammond would have been fully aware of the Constable connection with the cottage as he was a great admirer of Constable’s work. The artist uses light and colour to create this tranquil scene. The Stour is calm and reflective, the architecture of the cottage is well painted.
