Just a picture of some boats and a single arched bridge in Venice yet it is bursting with life. With thick impasto there is a feeling of life in the paint and in the painting. The composition is made up with a profusion of constructive, visible brush strokes. The thickly applied daubs of pigment have bold accents of light and shadow very much in the style of the Impressionists. The boats are moored to the side of the canal preparing to off-load their cargo. The figures provide movement. The position of the boats called for clever foreshortening and there is skilful rendering of depth to the view under the bridge.
