This is a very quick watercolour which is delightfully free and sketchy by Knighton-Hammond was painted in a very Impressionist manner. He would have painted the scene on the spot exploiting the light of the Mediterranean and the colours from his paint box. The figures are full of life and spontaneity as they engage in their individual conversations. The artist’s freer style does not slavishly represent detail but is executed with effortless ease and gracefulness. The dog adds to the composition of everyday life in a Continental market.
