The harbour at Dieppe would have been painted on one of Knighton-Hammond’s many trips across the channel during the 1920s and early 30s. The imposing architecture of the buildings surrounding the harbour side are bathed in sunlight. The composition is busy with lively, spontaneous figures engaged in conversations on both the harbour and the boats in the water. The figures are all painted with direct watercolours with no under drawing. This is a sign of great confidence and skill.
