This very Impressionistic watercolour of part of a square in France would have been executed en plein air by Knighton-Hammond. Painted directly onto the paper with no under drawing shows confidence and skill. The building has been quickly composed without being slavish to detail yet the suggestion of the architectural elements is perfectly sufficient. The rapidly painted figures and horse give a sense of scale and spontaneity. The majestic trees are imposing and break-up the sunlight producing shade. This is Knighton-Hammond painting with great freedom yet great accuracy.
