The Mermaid Inn is on the right in shadow on what Knighton-Hammond’s tells us by inscription was a grey day. The very famous street scene does have some sunshine breaking through further down the hill. He has depicted the architecture in a very Impressionistic manner and has not been slavish to detail. The colourful figures give a sense of scale and movement to the composition.
