A Group of Women

A Group of Women

Location: France

Subject: Conversation Piece

Medium: Watercolour

Date: 1920s

Signature: Knighton Hammond

Dimensions: 45 cm x 32 cm

The women in the foreground in conversation and going about their business, form the focal point of the composition. The figures would have been painted at lightning speed in the artist’s ‘shorthand’ yet so effective with the articulated drapery and arrested motion or frozen action. The tall buildings dominate the pictorial space and are painted in an Impressionist manner without detail. Watercolour has been used to exploit its special ability to convey light and space. This is another example of Knighton-Hammond portraying simple, everyday life and cleverly elevating it into an art form.
