This twilight scene is likely to be in the Lathkil Dale near Youlgreave. The lone cow is being milked by the farmer seated on his stool. The cow nonchalantly is gazing into the bustling river as she gives her milk. There is a single arched bridge spanning the river with buildings on the far side. The subdued lighting of the evening creates a stillness and atmosphere. A small shaft of light is picked out on the cow and on the rapids in the river. The artist takes advantage of the texture of the impasto with its thick, oily, saturated, subdued pigments in rhythmical brushstrokes to bring realism to the composition. Every stroke has been applied with an unerring sense of the total effect at some distance.
