This study of Margaret in red chalk has the artist working to pin down and develop a composition. He has sketched her laying on what is probably a beach towel and has carried out various studies of her head. This is capturing the artist’s first thoughts and reveals his intentions. One can gauge that K-H was wholly immersed in his art – simultaneously, spontaneous and inventive. It is not known if the sketch was later used to produce a painting.
