‘One of the mysteries of drawing is that the greatest artists can achieve a sense of volume through line alone’ Sir John Pope-Hennessy; Raphael, 1970, p41. This quotation by one of our greatest art historians admirably sums up this red chalk drawing of A Sussex Labourer by Knighton-Hammond. He is able to impart a sense of volume and there is vibrancy in the lines; the thickness of which is created by minutely lessening or increasing the pressure applied thus lightening or darkening these lines. There is a crisp outline and deftly controlled shading in the modelling. The portrait is more than just skilful drawing and he was renowned for his ability to capture the inner mood and personality of his sitter, who he drew from life. Knighton-Hammond also shows great skill in depicting the hands which demonstrate strength by his subtle exaggeration and boldness in form.
