This watercolour would have been painted soon after Knighton-Hammond arrived in Venice in 1922. Full of compositional details, the spectator in confronted by two pali di casada – stripped canal poles at the waterside. A pair of gondolas are moored up. The arched bridge spanning the canal have figures crossing. Clever brushstrokes evoke shimmering light reflecting off the water. Majestic Venetian architecture in the background is bathed in sunlight. There is some clever shading from the right.
