Alton High Street was painted soon after Knighton-Hammond returned from Cap Martin in 1932 and is one of two similar pictures - the other is in the Curtis Museum in Alton. The architecture is painted with great freedom and great accuracy. The spectator's eye navigates the high street through the draw of perspective. A colourful picture enlivened by the figures going about their business in the street.
