Arundel Castle was built at the end of the 11th century by Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Arundel. This is a bold watercolour with regards to form and painted on a dull day when the artist had returned to England from the French Riviera. He clearly managed to restrain himself and adapted his colour palette to suit the light and colour of Arundel. Knighton-Hammond set himself up north west of the castle and focuses on the circular Keep on the left and Bevis Tower on the right.
