Barges on the Thames, painted in pastel, a medium which suited Knighton-Hammond as he could work rapidly fix the scene when he first encountered it. The granular softness of the stick of pastel allowed him apply texture and to blur the edges of both object and reflection in the composition. The boats have skilful foreshortening. The bridges receding into the distance give depth to this colourful picture.
