This pastel of the Thames was painted on a sheet of sandpaper – Knighton-Hammond must have run out of pastel paper so had to improvise! He uses strong colours for the elements in shadow. The bow of the sailing boat is depicted in a strong orange and is cleverly reflected in the shimmering water. He creates a slight mistiness of atmosphere by skilful blending of pastel with delicacy and control. The composition is well drawn as we would expect with the technical virtuosity of Knighton-Hammond’s draughtsmanship.
