Knighton-Hammond was always happy to be out painting in the fields of local farms. He knew the farm owners well, most of them featured in his paintings. He was, therefore, always welcome on their land and his presence caused them amusement and pleasure. The cattle here, some standing and grazing and the others lying down, are painted with spirited brush strokes – quick and vibrant. There is a power and energy in the structuring of the animals. The eye of the spectator is lead into the picture from the foreground grass which is rich in harmonious modulation. The background trees are in a blue/green atmospheric colour. The sky is grey but still gives luminosity to the composition.
