Knighton-Hammond was always happy to be out painting in the fields of local farms. He knew the farm owners well, most of them featured in his paintings. He was, therefore, always welcome on their land and his presence caused them amusement and pleasure. His art is fuelled by a profound love of nature. The cattle here are grazing and painted with spirited brush strokes – quick and vibrant. There is a power and energy in the structuring of the animals. Quickly applied brushstrokes give the painterly illusion of movement and spontaneity. The sky is dramatic giving luminosity to the composition.
