The artrist has combined a family conversation piece with a study of nude women. Like all artists, studying in the life class was an essential element of training. The depiction of anatomy was perhaps the most challenging aspect for an artist. It was a subject in which Knighton-Hammond excelled. The figure studies here are freely painted in pure, direct watercolour with no underdrawing. He had the confidence to use the brush as an intrument of his draughtsmanship. The figures are fully focused and listen intensely to what is being said and the result of which is that it feels to the spectator that they are visually evesdropping on the conversation taking place.
