A view of Cortina at the foot of the Alps. The spectator’s eye is drawn from the local colours of the foreground into the range of buildings in the middle ground and onto the atmospheric distance and up to the mountain top. The figures and horse and rider give a sense of scale as they walk the road in front of the buildings. A fresh, colourful picture undertaken on one of the artist’s painting excursions soon after he arrived in Italy in 1922.
