This valley with a stream is in the Derbyshire Dales. The extensive landscape has great depth achieved by the use of local colour – the greens of the foreground and the mountain’s background where the greens appear blue due to the effects of the atmosphere. The foliage is well depicted as are the buildings. The sheep provide movement and scale to the composition. Painted is 1907, the artist is beginning to show greater competence.
