There is an intensity of light in this oil painting resulting from a combination of colour, variety of brush stroke and texture of the thick impasto paint. There is a scintillating movement of sunshine across the landscape and the river cascading down the waterfall. The brush strokes evoke the shimmering light on the water. With daubs of paint the foliage is very rich in form and colour. Even early in his career, Knighton-Hammond was able to achieve a close descriptive of observed nature. This resulted in his study of light, of coloured shadows of the tree and atmospheric effects in the background hills.
The time the artist spent in Youlgreave and the surrounding area was particularly important to his career development.
