Early Morning, Dorset would date from the late 1950s and demonstrates Knighton-Hammond’s skill in the depiction of the sky: the source of light which illuminates the landscape. We know from the artist’s personal studio collection of cloud studies that this was a subject that intrigued him. He studied the cloud studies of John Constable in the Tate Gallery which helped to inform his technique. The freely painted landscape is colourful and fluid with atmosphere complimenting the dramatic sky. Knighton-Hammond achieves recession in the landscape by the use of local and atmospheric colour (greens in the foreground and blue in the background).
