Evening Light - Cathedral, Dieppe

Evening Light - Cathedral, Dieppe

Location: Dieppe, France

Subject: Streetscape

Medium: Watercolour

Date: 1920s

Signature: Knighton Hammond

Dimensions: 47 cm x 49.5 cm

This evening scene is dominated by the façade of the cathedral with the evening light highlighting the stonework. In the foreground, in subdued light, the market stalls are still busy and in each cluster of figures a human story is being told. Painted quickly with the brush it gives the painterly illusion of movement and spontaneity. One can see Knighton-Hammond’s emerging mastery of urban streetscape painting in an Impressionist style and clearly there is a deepening understanding of the dynamics of urban life in France. It is likely that Knighton-Hammond was on one of his many trips across the channel when he stopped off at Dieppe to paint this picture.
