This harbour scene has an instinctive feeling for light, colour and tone using watercolour to produce a work of luminosity and clarity and rich in harmonious modulations. The boats are wonderfully depicted and it is clear the composition was only possible due to the technical virtuosity of the artist’s draughtsmanship. The masts and riggings are drawn directly with the brush in watercolour - a sign of supreme confidence and sure hand. The sailing boats beached in the harbour and the attending figures are bursting with information and only when your eyes escape the dynamic scene do you then begin to appreciate the domed building on the far side of the harbour. This is a work that targets the senses.
