Later in life Knighton-Hammond was still active in his studio often painting still life compositions. His third wife, Iris, was an accomplished flower arranger and would provide an arrangement in a vase in the studio. It was generally too formal for the artist and he would remove a few blossoms and place them on the table in front of the vase reducing the formality - much to his wife's annoyance! This appears to have been what happened with this arrangement painted in thick brightly coloured oil paints. The impasto technique provides texture to the composition giving a 3-D effect to the petals and leaves.
