Still life is, in large part, a salute to life – a celebration. This flower study was probably Knighton-Hammond amusing himself in his studio in later life. He enjoyed having flower arrangements in his studio, normally set up by his third wife and then dishevelled by the artist to lose the formality. Often, he would remove a flower or two from the arrangement and place them on the table adjacent the vase. The flowers, possibly white chrysanthemums, are well painted and there is disposition of space between the blossoms. There is also space behind the arrangement to the wall. Subtle brushwork gives modelling to the blossoms which is clever when depicting a monochrome subject.
