This harbour scene is so full of light and colour. The water is made up of brushstrokes in pure colour giving movement and reflections with an intense vibrancy. The rapid execution on the spot gives the finest Impression of the harbour with its wonderful freshness and immediacy. The boats, moored somewhat haphazardly, are an exercise in foreshortening and perspective. The buildings in the harbour background give the artist his architectural focus in an Impressionist manner. This watercolour shows that Knighton-Hammond was an innovative painter who first and foremost captured realism and naturalism in his compositions but with his Impressionist aesthetic.
