This seated portrait of the writer and philosopher Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) would have been undertaken in Ditchling. Chesterton was a frequent visitor to the town as his work was published by the Ditchling Press. He was a large man in both stature and in presence. Knighton-Hammond captures him in this etching comfortably seated in a relaxed pose. He has a philosophical gaze as he looks away from the spectator. There is an immediacy in the speed of the etching needle sketching on the copper plate to produce this powerful image.
