This early watercolour by Knighton-Hammond he has adopted the rule of the third’s convention in the composition. The lower third has the corn stacks of the harvesting and most of the action of the farm personal taking place. The middle third contains the architectural elements of the cottages and All Saint’s Church separated by the imposing mature trees. The upper third is the sky with its cloud formation. The figures surrounding or on the fully loaded horse drawn haycart give a sense of scale and movement. This is a very freely painted work with fluid brushstrokes. Further movement is provided by the smoke rising from the chimneys and the birds in flight. Depth in the picture has been achieved with the use of the ‘local’ green and yellow colours in the foreground transforming into the ‘atmospheric’ blue in the background modified by the vail of atmosphere. All-in-all an accomplished, beautiful, harmonious rural scene which the artist enjoyed painting during his stay in Youlgreave c1908.
