Herring Drifters near Yarmouth

Location: Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, UK

Subject: Coastal Scene

Medium: Oils

Date: 1930s

Signature: Knighton-Hammond

Dimensions: 49 cm x 59 cm

Great Yarmouth was the epicentre of the herring fishing industry. Here Knighton-Hammond shows the herring drifter fleet returning to the quayside. This oil painting was exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters 1939 in their 56th Annual Exhibition (Exhibit No. 63). There appears to be a combination of sailing and steam drifters in harbour. In conjunction with this variety of visible brushstrokes and texture of paint, Knighton-Hammond adopted a greater intensity in his colours. He used the brushstrokes to evoke the shimmering light reflecting of the sea. The composition is exceedingly rich in colour and full of vitality. Every stroke of the brush, seemingly so careless, has been evidently well thought out and the artist’s sure hand enables him to indicate form, colour and dappled light as the sun shines through the clouds. Amid a profusion of constructive, powerful strokes of impasto so well defined and so effective gives an insight into the creative process. This oil painting was purchased by the present owner direct from the artist’s studio in 1968.
