Hill Top Town, Franco/Italian Riviera Region

Hill Top Town, Franco/Italian Riviera Region

Location: Riviera, Italy

Date: 1920s

The composition of this watercolour draws the spectator from the foreground to the hill top town proudly perched on the rocky outcrop. The trees in the foreground are rich in colour and form. The arched bridge appears to be part of the access road network up to the town. The church is the only defined building with the rest rendered as impressions but achieves what the artist intended. Knighton-Hammond captures the geography of the area and focuses on the scintillating sunshine spread across the landscape. The artist has presented the town from a dramatic viewpoint giving a sense of his own excitement as he discovered the beauties of the setting.
