This early hunting scene would date from c1901/2 and is likely to have been executed on the kitchen table possibly from sketches. During the early 1900s when Knighton-Hammond was living in London times were tough. In order to pay the rent, the artist used to produce hunting and sporting scenes which he referred to as ‘pot boilers’. He would sell the watercolours through Fores of Piccadilly. The work clearly demonstrates that from early in his career Knighton-Hammond had a good grasp of foreshortening with the horses and hounds moving towards the spectator.
