This portrait of John, the artist’s son, poses with light coming from his right which assists the artist with the modelling of the head in particular. The light also seems to be reflected off the eye’s moist surface. John here is a young man dressed in a three-piece suit, collar and tie for his portrait. He is looking directly at his father and appears to be projected out into the space of the spectator. Knighton-Hammond was renowned for his ability to capture the inner mood and personality of his sitters, which he painted from life.  He conveys his son’s human presence rather than mere artist process.
