Looking down the Tittabawassee River

Location: Midland, Michigan, USA

Subject: Industrial Scene

Medium: Oils

Date: 1920

Signature: Knighton Hammond

Dimensions: 66.5 cm x 87.5 cm

With Looking down the Tittabawassee River at the Dow Chemical Plant, Midland, Michigan Knighton-Hammond creates a composition of power and movement. The power coming from the giant chimney stacks discharging smoke into the atmosphere and dispersing into the clouds. The artist was able to demonstrate industry harmonising with nature. The chimneys with their tall vertical lines breaking across the horizon at different heights and distances, create without any artificiality an inherently dignified design. The painting has impressionistic qualities in terms of the application of the thick oil paint applied to canvas.
