Knighton-Hammond clearly enjoyed being out and about in the market in Menton. The people in the town must have been used to seeing the English artist with his paintbox in the streets and market squares. Here, he captures the people going about their shopping and chatting to each other. The figures are painted with quick, spirited brush strokes giving movement and spontaneity. The facades of the imposing buildings are bathed in hazy sunlight. The trees in the square give verticality to the composition and one can almost feel the texture of the bark on the trunks.
