This watercolour of Marlow would date from the early 1900s. The cloudless sky is giving a range of light, colour and in turn atmosphere to the composition. One can sense the movement of the River Thames cascading over the weir. Knighton-Hammond positioned himself near Marlow Lock to paint the scene with All Saints Church dominating the skyline. The band of buildings and trees are atmospheric in colour silhouetted against the sky. The reflections in the water pick out the lighter colours of yellows and greens and Knighton-Hammond conjured up subtle qualities in watercolour to evoke the brightness of the day. Apart from the weir there is a stillness in the mood created by this budding young artist. With the absence of human presence, he has managed to optimise this aesthetic response to nature.
