In his latter years Knighton-Hammond could often be found visiting local farms. He knew the farmers well and was always welcomed to set up his paints. In this watercolour the cattle are meandering around the farmyard waiting for the dairyman to guide them to the milking parlour. The figures amongst the cattle give scale and movement to the composition. The buildings at the edge of the farmyard give a degree of perspective. The cattle have been painting at speed and even with the foreshortened animals their solidity and stature has been skilfully achieved. The standing water in the farmyard present from the recent storm has been cleverly used for reflections adding to the overall colour scheme.
