Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is a mountain village in Provence. Its picturesque nature would have inspired Knighton-Hammond to get out his watercolours and paint. The elevated village is painted in a very Impressionistic and atmospheric manner. The architecture and the arched bridge are painted with just sufficient detail to be fully appreciated. The low-lying foreground is dominated by trees. The landscape and trees in the foreground are typically Mediterranean cypresses and olives. The cypresses cleverly draws the spectator's eye up to the mountain top village.
