This unfinished work gives us an insight into Knighton-Hammond’s technique with painting in watercolours. With the brush and a stick of charcoal he outlines the main features of the composition. The building on the left in the Gatehouse to the Priory at Monacute House and on the right is the Church of St Catherine. Moving objects such as the ducks would have been quickly sketched in. The static features such as the architecture and the trees were given structure and detail. The sky would have followed. Knighton-Hammond would normally work en plein air. Here the sky appears bleak so it may well have been the artist was rained off. He put the picture in his portfolio and never got around to completely it in the studio. The painting would probably date from 1945 when we know Knighton-Hammond painted another painting of the Priory.
